The 25 Year Bet on Technology

In this blog post, I will be discussing two men by the names of Kevin Kelly and Patrick Sale who made a not so friendly wager roughly 28 years ago. Kevin Kelly is an adversary for the growth and expansion of the technological world. Kevin Kelly and his beliefs revolve around technology and how the advancement of technology will be great for this world in short term and long term. Patrick Sale on the other hand has drastically different views than Kelly. Patrick Sale believes that the advancement of technology will have negative effects on our economy and overall well being as a society. The conflict between the two men was the two sides of their views on technology. With polar opposite views on the matter the two men would clearly debate this. The bet the two men made on the matter was in 25 years which at the time was going to be the year 2020, that the world would go into an economic collapse worse than the Great Depression and there would be multiple environmental disasters, in saying this Sale practically believed that society would be coming to an end. On the other hand Kelly disagreed believed that technology would further advance society. The two men wagered 1000 dollars through check. The way the bet went is that although there is constant issues with the government there was no legitimate crashing of the economy at this time in history. For environmental disaster, yes Covid effected us and hit society hard but was bearable after a few years of testing and discovery on the virus, and for rich vs. poor there is a constant battle and in my opinion there always has been. The outcome of the bet was that Kelly won and Sale refused to believe the outcome. I personally agree with the judge and his verdict because although we currently live in a world ridden with political issues, we still function as a society. In the next 25 years I could see myself switching sides and believing in Sale and his word. The way things seem to be trending at the moment does not show great signs of economic stability in the future.
